- Elite fiber, exactly what we have been striving towards since we began this odyssey back in 2001. High standards have been set by Virginia's Department of Agriculture to define specifically which fleeces can qualify as Virginia's Finest and The Alpaca Garden has met and in cases exceeded those standards. Snowmass has published a well descripted explanation of commercially competitive fleece traits. Included in the report are well defined parameters for Royal Baby and Baby fine fleece types. Keeping it simple, Virginia's Finest standards for qualifying fleece includes only Royal Baby and Baby fine fiber or fleece with micron coming in under 23. Also known as Ultra and Super Fine, these fleece types are what all breeders should endeavor to achieve to stay competitive in the alpaca industry.
Separation of quality alpacas has been occurring since the conception of the alpaca industry. Now more than ever, fleece traits will determine the value of your herd.
